The bag is created with craftsmanship and it takes several days to make just one bag. This means that the look can vary, giving each bag its own unique character. The handmade bag is made from nettles that have been spun and then woven into bags in Nepal. This material is extremely durable and robust.
The strap is made of cotton and has a mandra in Sanskrit “Om Asato Ma Sadgamaya” which translates as “From the unreal, lead me to the truth.” It’s part of an important mantra from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad, an ancient Indian religious text. It is often used as a prayer or a form of meditation and has a deep symbolic meaning in Hindu philosophy.

It is a traditional way of weaving bags for the Chapang people. The technique has been used for centuries to make bags to transport food and merchandise. The Chapang people are an ethnic group in Nepal who have traditionally lived as nomads or semi-nomads. These groups, known as Chapang or Chapangi, are often marginalized communities and have historically had a low socio-economic status. Women in these communities play an important role in family life and society as a whole, but they often face challenges such as poverty, lack of education and limited access to healthcare and other basic services. However, there are efforts to improve their situation through various development programs and initiatives.
Aja and LAYA, are behind the production of these bags through workshops for these Chapang women and providing them with work under fair conditions and wages.
