Visionary design with heart and purpose

My name is Jane Mejse, and I am a designer at LAYA.

I am a person driven by a deep passion for both creativity and social responsibility. As a designer, I combine my aesthetic sense with strong ethics, where my love for craftsmanship meets my dedication to creating positive change in the world. My creative journey is marked by a commitment to preserving and renewing traditional art forms, while also bringing a sense of modern elegance and functionality into my designs.

I have chosen to produce in Nepal, not only because of its rich craft traditions but also because of my strong connection to the people I collaborate with. For me, it’s not just about production. It’s about creating a partnership based on trust, respect, and a shared vision of improving lives.

Nepal, a cultural and ethical choice

Nepal has a deeply rooted craft tradition, still practiced with an authenticity that is rare to find elsewhere. By working in Nepal, I can preserve and revitalize traditional craftsmanship while infusing it with new life through my modern designs.

My choice of Nepal is also driven by a strong social consciousness. Nepal is a country where many people, especially women, still struggle for economic independence and access to the labor market. My decision to produce there is a deliberate act to support these women by providing them with training, jobs, and a path out of poverty. I believe that true sustainability starts with people and that it is possible to create products with both soul and substance.

My commitment to Nepal is thus both an expression of my love for craftsmanship and my belief that design can be a tool for social change. In a world where mass production often dominates, I am a voice for authenticity, quality, and social responsibility. For me, every product is a story—a story of tradition, hope, and progress that I proudly share with you.

My Work in Nepal

My work in Nepal is a combination of creative design and social engagement. I have chosen to collaborate with artisans in Nepal because I am deeply fascinated by the country’s rich traditions and cultural heritage. My goal is to preserve these ancient craftsmanship techniques while breathing new life into them through modern design. This work is about more than just creating products—it’s about building connections, opportunities, and a sustainable future for the people I work with.

A significant part of my work in Nepal is supporting women’s empowerment. I collaborate with local organizations that help women learn craft skills such as sewing and weaving. These skills provide women with the opportunity to become economically independent and take control of their lives. I am proud to create jobs for these women and to give them a platform where they can realize their potential and build a better future for themselves and their families.

Working with Nepalese people requires cultural sensitivity, patience, and a willingness to learn and adapt to their work culture. In return, you can expect loyalty, hard work, and a positive collaborative spirit.

Women Empowerment

Women Empowerment refers to the process of increasing women’s self-esteem, autonomy, and access to resources, opportunities, and rights. This enables women to take control of their lives and participate fully in society on an equal footing with men. It involves both personal and social changes, where women are empowered to make their own decisions, achieve economic independence, and play an active role in their communities.

Each purchase of LAYA’s products contributes to empowering women in Nepal, who, through our work, achieve a stable income, valuable experience, and a sense of empowerment. Your support helps create lasting change in their lives while bringing a piece of Nepal’s rich culture into your home.
